About this tool

Shrink a photo that is too big to email, too heavy for a web page, or over an upload limit. Move the quality slider and watch the size change, or name a target such as 500 KB and let the tool search for the highest quality that fits, re-encoding and measuring until it lands. You can also cap the longer side, which moves file size far more than quality does. The original and the result sit side by side so you can judge the trade for yourself before saving.

Helpful answers

Using this tool

How does the size target work?

By trial. Nothing predicts how many bytes a quality setting will produce for a particular picture, so the tool encodes the image, measures it, adjusts and tries again — up to eight times, narrowing in each round. It keeps the highest quality that came in under your target, not merely the first result that fitted.

What if my target cannot be reached?

You are told so, with the smallest size the image will actually compress to, rather than being handed an unusable result. Reducing the dimensions is the usual answer: halving width and height quarters the pixel count and moves file size much further than quality alone.

Why did my PNG get bigger?

PNG is lossless — the quality setting does nothing to it. To make a photograph smaller, convert it to JPEG or WebP. PNG is the right format for screenshots and flat graphics, where it is already close to as small as it goes.

Does compressing twice lose more quality?

Yes. Every JPEG or WebP re-encode discards a little more detail, and it never comes back. Compress from your original file where you can, rather than from something already compressed.

Is the image uploaded to compress it?

No. It is read into this page and encoded by your own browser. Nothing is transmitted, which you can verify in the network tab.
